Counting chargers on their own tells you the network is growing. It doesn't tell you whether it's growing anywhere useful. Gas stations are a good proxy for where fuel demand actually exists — they sit where people already stop, on the routes people already drive, and they took a century to arrive at those locations.
Overlaying the two turns an abstract number into a geography. Dense blue with no orange is a place where drivers can refuel but not recharge: a rural stretch of interstate, a small city off the main corridor, a region a network map counts as covered because one station sits at its edge. Those are the gaps — and they are where the next chargers would do the most good.
It also shows the reverse, which is worth seeing: metro areas where fast charging is already dense, and where another station adds far less than the same money spent on a blank stretch two hundred miles away.
You can hide either layer, dim the gas dots, filter chargers by minimum port count or by network, and switch basemaps. No alternative fuels — CNG, propane, E85, hydrogen, biodiesel — appear in either layer, and only fast charging counts; Level 1 and Level 2 are excluded, since those aren't a substitute for a fuel stop.
Chargers come from the US Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center, filtered to public, currently-available DC fast stations. Filling stations come from OpenStreetMap. Both layers refresh automatically every week.
OpenStreetMap is crowd-sourced, so filling-station coverage is very good but isn't a legal register. The AFDC is the authoritative US charger inventory, but individual stations are confirmed on their own schedule — each popup shows when that station was last verified.
